By 1962, the Beatles had auditioned for every major record label in England without success. They were a popular live band in Liverpool, but a recording contract seemed out of reach. However, in the summer of that year they were given one last chance.

The Beatles EMI Audition and Contract

George Martin, a record producer with the obscure EMI subsidiary label, Parlophone, agreed to audition the group. During the audition, he made every member play their instrument. He concluded that Pete Best’s drumming was not good enough to record.

However, he offered the group a contract, with the lowest royalty rates possible, a penny for each single sold. When told of Martin’s opinion of Pete, the other boys, 21 year old Paul Mc Cartney, 22 year old, John Lennon, and 19 year old George Harrison, decided to fire him.
