Edward became a celebrity after World War I as millions thought he was Prince Charming personified. He appeared to be blessed with good health, a strong charisma, wealth, popularity and, as the Prince of Wales, heir to the British throne. Newspapers and newsreels recorded overseas tours of America and Commonwealth countries, including Australia and Canada.
Prince of Wales
Most of his life was kept hidden from everyone except those in the inner circles of the government and the royal household, causing apprehension and doubts about his future reign. He lacked character and discipline. Edward often became obstinate and irritable as he regarded royal ceremonials and protocol as boring and annoying.
Edward preferred living a indulgent life and he had several affairs with older married women, including Thelma Furness and Freda Dudley-Ward. He regularly visited Mayfair nightclubs, and his parents disapproved of his friends in the sporty, unintelligent, fashionable “fast set” and their pro-fascist views. Many still expected Edward to marry and produce an heir.
